Celebrating Pittsburgh’s second-ever National League championship roster, the local R.W. Johnson studio appropriately captured this team panoramic photo in September, 1909 (just weeks before the Bucs scored their first Fall Classic triumph). Measuring 14 x 3-1/4”, this thick stock fold-out postcard showcases a three-panel team depiction with printed identifiers (as they appeared on the original negative). This scarce survivor is mounted to a cardboard backing. More on our website.
The likeness was captured in September 1909 (as indicated on the vintage studio stamping), likely during the club’s 16-game winning streak that increased its lead from five to 10 games and all but clinched the N.L. flag. With the newly erected Forbes Field in the background, (26) Pirate principals stand side by side, with Wagner (second to end, far right) and Clarke (last on far right) the most prominent. The vintage piece presents nicely, though has endured a small tear on the upper edge, as well as some paper loss on the reverse. Most on the middle portion (with printed studio identifiers) is unaffected).
