Pre-dating modern methods of documentation and massive media exposure, some mighty shady conspirators had their way more often than we’ll ever know. Concurrent with the infamous “Black Sox” disgrace, the 1919 Detroit Tigers (by several reliable accounts) arranged to “fix” at least one late-season outcome to secure third-place revenue. This OAL Johnson ball is autographed by (19) members of a Motor City roster that, to be sure, wasn’t always on the level. The off-white orb has a series of surface abrasions, yet showcases decidedly bold trademark stampings. Black-ink pennings, meanwhile, vary in terms of quality with keys including: Heilmann (“6” strength) and Jennings (“7” strength). Full photo LOA from JSA. More on our website.

North Panel: Jennings (manager, “7” strength; inscribed “1919” in Jennings’ hand); unidentified and Tuthill (trainer, "5-6" strength); South Panel: Golding (sports writer, “4-5” strength), Sheahan (secretarial), Shorten (“3” strength), Heilmann (“6” strength), Love (“3” strength), Dowd (“4” strength) and unidentified; West Panel: Yelle (“2-3” strength), Dauss (“3-4” strength) and (5) unidentified; East Panel: Veach (“3” strength) and unidentified.
