Strength personified, Jimmie Foxx launched home runs at an alarming rate, joining fellow Maryland native Babe Ruth in the esteemed 500 Home Run fraternity at the tender age of 32. As scarce as his herculean powers, Foxx’s autograph is a sight to behold on this OAL Harridge baseball. The orb displays effects of diamond use, with scattered abrasions and surface marks. The trademark stampings date the keepsake to 1940-1942, confirming its status as a rare example from Harridge’s lengthy reign. Additionally, the ball is from the era during which Foxx reached the above-mentioned milestone. Executed on a side panel in blue-ink fountain pen, Foxx’s signature projects (“6”) strength and clarity. On an adjacent panel, Foxx has added a personalization and “7/20/1940” has penned in an unknown hand. Full photo LOA from JSA.
July 20, 1940 (the date inscribed on the ball), incidentally, was the date on which Foxx hit his 485th career home run.
