Description

A who’s who of early 1900s sports figures are honored in this 1927 “Celebrities in the World of Sport” poster issued by the “Southern Agriculturist” newspaper of Lexington, Ky. Presenting in attractive above-average condition with light creases and small edge tears this star-studded 27x35 premium is professionally framed to dimensions of 34-1/2 x 42-1/2”. Featured are (58) different photos including baseball legends Cobb, Ruth, Alexander and Mathewson; boxing champs Corbett, Dempsey, Tunney and Sullivan and gridiron greats Rockne and Grange. More on our website.

The aforementioned creases and edge tears have little impact on the dynamic appeal of this vintage promotional piece. The light creases appear at horizontal intervals suggesting they derived from the poster being rolled up and in effect they serve to support the authentic attractiveness of this star-studded placard. The edge tears appear at the top and bottom and do not affect the key images. None extend more than 5” in from the edge, however several on the bottom edge show unobtrusive tape/residue upon close inspection. The wood frame is in good condition with several gouges and scratches. The cream and wine colored double matting accent the frame’s cherry tone and the posters authentic light overall toning perfectly. A 3x1 brass plate dated “1927” showing moderate wear is affixed at center on the bottom border of the cream matting.

Pictured at center in a large oval portrait photo is 1927 reigning heavyweight boxing champ Gene Tunney. The baseball stars appear on the left side and are from top to bottom Ruth in batting pose and portraits of Cobb, Alexander, Mathewson and Speaker. The poster title is printed boldly just below the Tunney portrait. C. Lindbergh and (6) other “world famous aviators” are located below the title. Other notables are billiards ace W. Hoppe, swimmer J. Weismuller, tennis stars B. Tilden R. LaCoste and H. Wills, golfers W. Hagen, B. Jones and G. Sarazen and old-time hockey heroes C. Johnson and M. Mackay. The upper border is printed at center as “Southern Agriculturist, First in the Farm Homes of the South, Nashville, Tenn., Louisville, Ky.” and “Our Slogan is Kill the Scrub Sire” on the left and “We Advocate Eight Months School for Every Child” on the right.
